My business needs a steady supply of new customers. Yours does
too, probably. Customers leave and go with competitors.
Customers go out of business. Customers fall away without a word
of explanation. So I need—you need—a regular supply of new
customers to replace the ones that disappear each year.

The challenge in business-to-business direct mail is knowing
where to look for new business. You need a source of potential
new clients that is reliable and affordable. A source that will
give you the contact information you need to send a direct mail
package to prospective customers who need, want and can afford
what you offer.

At a minimum, any source of names should supply the following
for each lead:

First name, last name Job title Company name Address (sometimes
on two lines) City Province or state Postal code or zip code

Other details that are nice to know: SIC Code (Standard Industry
Classification) Industry by name Size of company (in number of
employees or sales volume) Telephone number Email address
Business type (manufacturing, services, consulting) Job function
(engineer, owner, purchasing, management) Purchasing authority
Budget Geographic region (international region, country, state)

Where to find names of potential customers:

Associations There is an Association of Legal Administrators.
There is an association for social workers who specialize in
helping people with cancer (Association of Oncology Social
Work). There is an association for manufacturers of fasteners in
the mid-west of the United States (The Mid-West Fastener
Association).

If your target audiences is a niche market, the first place to
look for potential customers is trade associations. These
associations (local, regional, national, international) often
rent lists of names of their members

Trade publications Most industries have a trade journal. You are
familiar, of course, with Frozen Food Age, Industrial Hygiene
News, Eyecare Business and Waste News. These trade publications
and most others also rent the names of their subscribers.

Trade directories You could look in the phone book. Or you could
look in the Organic Export Directory, a compilation of contact
names for companies that export organic food products. The more
narrow the field, the more likely it is to have its own
directory of companies in the industry. Some of these
directories are in print, and some are online as well.

List brokers List brokers are specialists who help one company
use the list of another company. Their services include
research, selection and recommendation of lists. A list broker,
for example, would search on your behalf for lists that meet
your unique criteria. There is a Hospitality/Travel
Professionals list. And a Firefighters Bookstore list (people
who have purchased from Firefighters Bookstore). And a Federal
Student Aid Schools list (28,994 schools that provide federally
financed aid to their attendees).

House list Your best source of new business is your database of
current and lapsed customers, otherwise known as your house
list. Getting business from a current customer is always less
expensive than getting business from a new customer.

Government For some products and services, another excellent
source of potential clients is the government. I have a number
of clients who buy mailing lists from their state governments
and use them to mail offers to businesses that are in their
target audience. One client buys the names of dentists and
dental hygienists whose licenses are about to expire, and mails
those prospects a direct mail piece that promotes the client’s
continuing education courses (which prospects need to take and
pass to renew their licenses). Another client buys the names of
garages in his state who conduct state-mandated vehicle safety
inspections. He mails them direct mail pieces that promote his
software product, which is designed specifically for these
inspection stations.

Keep in mind that the most important part of any
business-to-business direct mail lead generation campaign is the
list. You can have a great product, a terrific offer and the
best timing, but if you mail to the wrong people, well, you know
what happens. So make sure you get the best list you can.

I have looked hard but I cannot find the different jobs a firefighter can do. I know that there’s the guys that hold the hose. Guys who ventilate the building, search and rescue… But thats all I have heared of. What are all the jobs that you can perform as a fire fighter?

If you live in a major metropolitan area, your local newspaper is the first place to look for a firefighting job. And the best day to find ads for firefighting jobs is the paper’s Sunday edition – as this is the day when most fire departments post their openings.

If you do not live in a major metro area, you can go to your local library on Monday, where you will most likely find Sunday newspapers from major metro areas. For example, if you were to live in Limon, Colorado, your best bet would be the Sunday edition of the Denver Post.

Where else can you look?

If, for some reason, your local library does not subscribe to Sunday newspapers from nearby major cities, you can try news stands or bookstores, such as Borders, or Barnes & Noble as they will often have the Sunday editions of major newspapers.

Expand your horizons

Next, there is a Firehouse website which has a jobs section. FireCareers is another website with nationwide ads for firefighting jobs. However, before you go to sources like these, you need to ask yourself whether or not you would be willing to relocate and, if so, how far you would be willing to move. The fact is, if you are flexible and willing to relocate, your chances of landing a firefighter position increase dramatically. For example, when this article was written, the website Firehouse had openings posted for a firefighter/paramedic in Toledo, Ohio; for a firefighter/paramedic in Texas; a firefighter in Kansas; and for a firefighter in Boston.

Take a course

Another good source of information about firefighting jobs is to take a firefighting course at your local community college or a seminar related to firefighting. This is because most of these courses and seminars are taught by people still working in fire departments. As such they may be aware of openings and testing opportunities. Just as important, these classes and seminars give you the opportunity to network with other people looking for firefighter jobs and they may be able to provide you with helpful information. Also, these classes and seminars can increase your level of education and add important information to your resume.

Read a magazine.

There are trade publications written specifically for fire departments and firefighters. One of these is Firehouse Magazine which occasionally lists entry-level firefighter jobs. Subscribe to one or more of these publications and you will not only find advertised positions, you will also learn more about firefighting.

Who gives the examinations?

You may not be aware of this, but fire departments in most cities do not give firefighter examinations. In fact, these tests are usually given by city or county human resource (HR) or personnel offices. Almost all cities and counties have offices that handle the testing for the agencies within their jurisdictions, including fire departments. The way it works is that the fire department tells the HR department or Personnel office that it has openings for fire fighters and that an exam needs to be scheduled. The HR or Personnel office will then schedule and administer the testing.

Contact each department individually.

While you should be sure to contact your local HR or personnel department, you should also contact each fire department in your area individually as some of them may not use the city or county personnel department for testing. Instead of this, they may have their own personnel services manager to handle testing and recruitment.

Be patient and persistent.

There is so much competition for firefighter jobs these days, the odds are that you will not be successful the first time you apply. Today’s firefighter exams typically take three to 3 1/2 hours and consist of 100 or more questions. If you do not post a very high score, you will be out of luck until the next examination is held. However, don’t become discouraged. Many firefighters have taken the examination two, three, four or more times before succeeding. In fact, they will tell you that taking the exam several times, makes it more likely that you will score very well the third or fourth time you try.

HUD is a government agency which is the shortened form of US Department of Housing and Urban Development. There are many homes that are owned by HUD that are up for sale. You may want to find some of these homes which offer low purchase prices. HUD obtains homes through foreclosures which are completed on a home which was purchased through a mortgage insured by FHA. These units may be between 1 to 4 units of residential property for dwelling. Since HUD loses money on the foreclosure they place these specific homes up for sale in order to get back some of the lost funds from the process.

Virtually anyone can buy one of the HUD homes that are up for sale. Priority is given to the people who want to use it as their main residence. If the homes have been up for sale long enough without interest from people who want to live there, investors are given their chance to buy it if they desire to rent it out.  Some professionals in varying career paths may also be given priority along with an extra reduction on the sale price. In special areas; teachers, firefighters, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and law enforcement officers are given these deals. The specific name for these is the Good Neighbor Initiatives.

HUD homes can be found mainly on the internet. They are listed online with management companies who have agreed to directly contract with HUD. The real estate agents who are registered with HUD directly have the possibility of contracting the purchase by submitting your offer to HUD. HUD also helps the real estate broker by paying their commission for them.

As with any home you buy from anybody you must get an inspection. An inspection lets you know of any problems that the home may face such as major repairs or unseen issues that may be very costly to fix. You may not have the funds to fix these or the desire to fix them either. You may also want to get multiple inspections if the first does not satisfy you. Since this is such a large investment you want to be completely prepared and satisfied before plunging in and sealing the deal. HUD homes are sold as is so once you sign the paperwork it is done and there is no turning back.

Financing may be a concern for you as well. Unfortunately, HUD does not offer any financing directly through them.

 Some homes that they have available are eligible for the FHA insured loans which you must get separately. They are the federal housing administration and are the biggest government insurer of mortgages in the entire world. You can also do some research while shopping around to find the best lender for your individual situation. Look at many of them to find the best terms for your loan with both points and the lowest interest rate available.

HUD is a great place to start when you decide that you’re going to purchase a home.

I’m a trained firefighter, but I’ve been in Iraq for the past two years and would like to stay home. I am not opposed to a new career path because there are so few firefighting gigs out there. I guess I got a little burned out with all the drilling we did in the 140 degree heat. Poor me, right? I have other skill sets, but am looking for a good job service that can put me where I need to be. Can anyone help? I’ve spoken to a career counselor but he didn’t seem to be much help. He made me answer my own questions but I have more specific ones about my skill sets that he couldn’t answer.

Ever wonder how some people can work under pressure and still have a smile on their face? Or how some people remain genuinely pleasant, even though their plans don’t exactly push through? The answer is simple. These people know the secret to happiness despite having problems.

You must be thinking. Good for them. They must have a really nice job, a high-paying salary, a generous boss and a wonderful work environment. It’s not that difficult to find happiness when you can easily pay your bills or when you have your dream job. How does this concern me? I only have a regular job, a regular pay, a crappy cubicle and an even crappier superior… How do I turn my life around for the better?

Well, the answer lies in you yourself. Don’t sound so surprised. You don’t need all those grand dreams to be happy where you are. Those rewards will come in time. Believe it or not, you can achieve happiness despite any problems that may come your way.

How Do You Deal With Your Situation?

The first thing you have to do to achieve happiness despite problems is to accept your situation. Don’t pine for the lives of others. If you keep on looking at your neighbor’s grass, you’ll only strain your neck and miss out on possibly finding happiness in your own garden.

Take the time to see where you’re at. And I mean, really look at what you have. Everyone has something of value. Whether it’s in the form of connections, of friends, of insights or of opportunities, everyone has something worthy. Be grateful for the things you have.

Accepting what you have allows you to see things clearer. Instead of spending the day grousing about your job, take a few minutes to appreciate the positive elements in it. Despite having a stingy boss, don’t you find solace in your fellow employees? Despite earning salaries at minimum rate, aren’t you picking up a lot of invaluable work experience?

There are a lot of things you should be grateful for. If you have a family, be thankful that you’re all still together. If you have a roof over your head, be grateful for that, too.

There’s an Ancient Persian quote that says: “I wept because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet.” This goes to show that even though you think you’re burdened with problems, you should still count your blessings and show your appreciation towards what you have, no matter how trivial you might think they are. 
 
Do You Know Your Own Purpose?

One of the key steps to achieving happiness despite having problems is to discover what your purpose or contribution is to your family, society, or company.  For example, your job isn’t just a grueling 9-5 routine. It serves a bigger purpose. Without your job, the company would not be able to function well. Find the meaning behind your work and you’ll soon find yourself motivated to perform your best. You’ll have a better reason to wake up every morning and you’ll have more energy to complete the tasks assigned to you.

Think about firefighters for example. Why do you think men and women on the fire brigade are so passionate about their jobs? Obviously, it’s not the safest occupation in the world. But if you ask many of these brave individuals, they’ll tell you one common thing. Lives are at stake. It’s their duty to save as many lives as they can. Firefighters are clear about what they’re supposed to do. They help others. Period.

The problem with most people who are unhappy with their way of life is that they don’t know what they’re supposed to do. Sure, they have a list of tasks to fulfill and they might even finish the list promptly, but as to what their purpose in life is… Their mind draws a blank.

Think about your job. Think about the people closest to you. When you think about others for a change, you might be surprised at how easy the answers will come to you.

How Big A Difference Does A Small Step Make?

Achieving happiness despite being surrounded by problems doesn’t call for you to take grand leaps of faith. Not all the time, anyway. Even a small act of kindness can uplift your day. A quiet shift of thought can do miracles for your mood. And even a small dose of sugary confections can change your world entirely.

Everything you need to turn your life around is in your hands. Everything is just a matter of perception. When you’re unhappy, you tend to ignore the little things. You finish your cup of coffee at an alarming rate and hurry back to your desk with a frown on your face.

For once, why don’t you take your time in the snack room and savor the aroma of your coffee? Even ten minutes of peace can have an impact on the rest of your day. Take time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Or call an old friend to meet with you for lunch.

Achieving happiness despite problems is not a difficult thing; and yet so many people seem to have a hard time with it. While there’s no such thing as a perfect world, you always have full control over yourself, your attitude and your mindset.
