This might seem like a dumb question but what is the difference between a career firefighter and a voluneeter.?

I was reading up on firefighting occupations and it said that most of the firefighters were volunteers but both did the same tasks. Can someone clear that up for me?

  • Brad F:

I believe volunteers dont get paid or a pension

  • The definition is determined not just by pay. POP (paid on premise) and POC (paid on call) both get paid but fall into the volunteer category. The biggest differences are job security, unions, pay, training, pensions, and so on. Volunteer can make a career out of firefighting but they are not career firefighters. Yet, they do the same job. And often being a volunteer is MORE dangerous then being a career firefighter b/c you have less training and often work with different ppl.

    salary comes with a career

  • okie:

volunteers do it without pay while career firefighters get paid salary. Also volunteers are on call 24hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year while career firefighters usually work 24hr on and 48hr off.

Volunteer firefighter myself and volunteer EMT

  • Bob:

if you are a career fire fighter you get paid, volunteeters don’t.

The firefighter that has that job as a career gets paid.
and the volunteer firefighter does this job with out some
    sort of payment.
