1.Firefighting occurs in a variety of settings, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that competition to become a firefighter is high. In 2008, the median salary of a firefighter was $44,260 per year. While there are different types of firefighting jobs, the goal of firefighters remains the same: to save lives and promote safety.
Urban Firefighters
An urban firefighter works in a large city or a surrounding area. Urban firefighters respond to incidents such as auto accidents, medical emergencies and fires in buildings and homes. Urban fire departments generally receive sufficient funding to hire full-time experienced firefighters and part-time employees who are new to the field and want to get experience.
Rural Firefighters
Rural firefighters work in areas mostly made up of farmlands, towns with lower populations or areas that tend to be more isolated. Rural fire departments do not receive large budgets and tend to rely more upon the assistance of community volunteer firefighters. Rural firefighters who work near isolated areas of land may use grass rigs and tankers that carry large quantities of water to areas that do not have fire hydrants.
Wildfire Firefighters
Some firefighters start out fighting wildfires. Others fight wildfires during the summer to earn extra income or join a wildfire team to use specialized firefighting skills. Different firefighting jobs that involve wildfires include engine crews, handcrews, helitacks, rappellers and smoke jumpers. Hotshot firefighters provide logistical support. Smoke jumpers are trained to parachute out of an airplane into remote areas hard to access. Rappellers rappel from a helicopter into an area affected by a wildfire.
Volunteer Firefighters
Volunteer firefighters, also called reserve firefighters, receive the same training as traditional firefighters and have the same certifications. While the title says “volunteer,” some departments offer their reserve crew a stipend. Volunteer firefighters often work long shifts on a routine basis but generally have a full- or part-time job elsewhere. Some fire departments require their volunteer staff to work and live a specific amount of miles from the firehouse in the event of an emergency, as volunteer firefighters are often on call after a shift ends.
